Can I Do Dental Implants Without Taking CBCT Scans or X-rays?

If you are considering dental implants, you may have been told that you need to take CBCT scans or dental X-rays before the procedure. It is not uncommon for patients to wonder: Is this really necessary? Can’t I skip the scans and just go straight to treatment? Is the dentist trying to fleece me?

It is a fair question, especially if you are concerned about radiation exposure, additional costs, or simply want to minimise your dental visits. At Maple Dental, we believe in helping you understand exactly why certain steps are recommended — and when they are (or are not) negotiable.

In this blog post, we will be covering:

  • What CBCT scans and dental X-rays are used for in implant planning
  • Why they are considered essential for safe implant placement
  • Whether implants can be done without them, and the risks involved
  • What alternatives exist if you are hesitant about imaging

What Are CBCT Scans and X-rays — And Why Are They Used?

CBCT Scan (Cone Beam Computed Tomography)

This is a 3D scan of your entire jaw, bone structure, and surrounding anatomy. It allows us to view the depth, width, density, and position of your bone in real-time, from all angles.

Dental X-rays (Periapical or Panoramic)

These are 2D images that help assess tooth roots, existing teeth, and areas of potential infection.

Both types of imaging are used to:

  • Determine if there’s enough bone to support an implant
  • Check for nerves, sinuses, or blood vessels that could be affected
  • Plan the exact angle, position, and depth of the implant for long-term stability
  • Assess whether a bone graft or sinus lift is needed beforehand

Can I Get Dental Implants Without Taking a CBCT or X-ray?

Technically, yes, but it’s not recommended.

Placing implants without imaging is like performing surgery blindfolded. It increases the risk of:

  • Hitting a nerve or sinus cavity
  • Placing the implant at the wrong angle
  • Implant failure due to insufficient bone support
  • Complications that could have been avoided with proper planning

At Maple Dental, we do not perform dental implants without prior imaging — because your safety is our top priority.

What Could Go Wrong Without a Scan?

Here’s what might happen if an implant is placed without a CBCT or proper diagnostics:

Implant hits the nerve in the lower jaw
This could lead to permanent numbness or pain in your lips, chin, or tongue.

Implant punctures the sinus
This can cause sinus infections, implant instability, or require surgical correction.

Implant placed in weak or thin bone
This may lead to early implant failure — and the need to repeat surgery later on.

Incorrect angulation or positioning
A poorly positioned implant can affect how your bite feels, or how your crown fits.

But I’m Concerned About Radiation. Is CBCT Safe?

Yes — modern CBCT scans are very low in radiation, especially compared to medical CT scans.

To put it into perspective:

  • A CBCT scan exposes you to less radiation than a short-haul flight
  • The radiation dose is lower than what you would get from a full mouth X-ray
  • It is a targeted scan — limited to the jaw area, not your entire body

At Maple Dental, we use advanced digital imaging systems that keep radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA principle).

What If I Cannot Afford a CBCT Scan?

We understand that affordability matters.

A CBCT scan in Singapore typically costs $150–$300. If cost is a concern, we can help you structure the cost in stages — especially if you’re doing a multi-phase treatment

At Maple Dental, we will always inform you upfront of all charges — no hidden fees, no surprises.

Why Maple Dental Recommends Imaging Before Every Implant

At Maple Dental, every implant case is handled by Dr Colin Lam, who has years of surgical experience. He personally reviews every CBCT scan to:

✔ Ensure the implant is placed with surgical precision
✔ Avoid unnecessary complications or retreatment
✔ Determine whether any bone grafting is needed (or not)
✔ Customise your crown to fit your jaw shape and bite perfectly

We don’t guess. We plan — because your smile deserves no less.

In Summary: Should You Skip the Scan?

While it’s technically possible to place an implant without a scan or X-ray, doing so increases your risk of:

  • Surgical complications
  • Implant failure
  • Additional procedures in the future

Imaging gives your dental team the clarity they need to deliver long-term success and safety.

Dental implants are a lifelong investment. Don’t skip the foundation — because every great result starts with precise planning.
